Every day, you make dozens of implicit decisions about communication mode. In networking terms, you are choosing between packet switching and circuit switching.

Packet switching — the foundation of the internet — breaks messages into independent chunks that travel flexibly through the network. Seventy percent of staff reported that async improved interpersonal communication, with only 5% reporting degradation.

But that same meta-analysis of 79 studies found that familiar, face-to-face teams showed a significantly stronger relationship between communication quality and performance than virtual or unfamiliar teams. Depending on context, the violation can be positively or negatively evaluated, but it always disrupts the expected flow.

Conway's Law, articulated in 1967, makes the relationship between communication topology and organizational output explicit: organizations are constrained to produce designs that copy their communication structures. If your teams are siloed, your products will be siloed.

Jeff Bezos understood this. In 2002, he issued what has become known as the Amazon API Mandate: all teams must expose their data and functionality through service interfaces. No backdoor communication. No shared databases. Every interaction between teams had to go through a formal, documented protocol. Your Inbox Is a Buffer. Manage It Like One.

Christian and Griffiths' most provocative insight in their networking chapter is about bufferbloat. In networking, buffers are temporary storage areas that hold data when transmission paths are congested. A little buffering smooths out variability. Too much buffering is catastrophic — it increases latency without bound, creating the illusion that the system is working when packets are actually sitting in an ever-growing queue, arriving too late to be useful.

Ambiguity promotes unified diversity — fostering agreement on abstractions without limiting interpretations. In networking, ambiguity is noise. In a boardroom, it is sometimes essential to diplomacy.

Communication constitutes social reality rather than merely describing it. When a judge says "I now pronounce you married" or a manager says "You're hired," these utterances do not transmit information — they create states of affairs. J.L. Austin's speech act theory and the Communication as Constitutive of Organizations theory both insist that organizations are not merely using communication as a tool. They are constituted by it.

Gregory Bateson demonstrated that every human utterance operates simultaneously at content and relationship levels. A parent saying "I love you" with hostile body language sends contradictory messages at different logical levels — and the contradiction itself carries meaning. Network protocols operate at clearly separated, non-contradictory layers. Human communication layers routinely contradict each other, and this contradiction is not noise. It is signal.

And there are documented harms from over-engineering human systems. Taylorism's treatment of workers as interchangeable machine components produced labor unrest and creativity suppression. Because when you ask "How are you?", you are not just negotiating parameters. You are acknowledging a person. And that — the acknowledgment of personhood — is what no amount of protocol optimization will ever fully capture.

Use the algorithms. They are genuinely useful. But remember that the person on the other end of the connection is not a node.
